The Mayfly

TYPOGRAPHY

This sixty-page handmade book physically illustrates the short lifespan of the mayfly through the use typography. The mayfly spends the majority of its life underwater as it grows and feeds on the riverbed. When wings have developed the insects leave the water where they then mate and die once fertilised eggs are dropped back into the water.

Over 24 months the insect grows and the typography builds up until the user physically pulls the mayfly above the surface, displaying in all its glory. Similarly to how it dies after just one day above the water, the text then disappears and the cycle begins again.
